Beginner Friendly Tutorial

Coasters are a great way to add a splash of color or personality to any space. Not to mention, they can protect your surfaces from glassware.

I am going to provide directions for those who may have different set ups, then I have.

Supplies - (Please not that some links are affiliate links, which means if you purchase using them, I make a tiny amount of $)

  1. 5" width cut of Fabric A

  2. 5" width cut of Fabric B

  3. 5" width cut of Batting

  4. Thread

  5. Iron

  6. Sewing machine

Preparation

Measuring fabric

Cutting the Fabric and Batting:

Cut 4 pieces each of Fabric A, Fabric B, and batting into 5"x5" squares

Rotary cutter -Cut a 5" strip of fabric.

Rotate the fabric 90 degrees and cut it into 5"x5" squares.

Scissors - Mark the back side of the fabric with a heat erasable marker to outline the 5"x5" squares.

Cut out the squares along the marked lines.

Sewing

Coaster assembly
  1. Assembling the Coaster:

  • Place Fabric A and Fabric B right sides together. (Right sides together means the printed sides of the fabric should face each other.)

  • Then, place the batting piece on top of Fabric B, on the wrong side.

2. Sewing the Edges:

  • With your stack of three fabrics, sew a 1/4" seam allowance along three of the sides.

  • On the fourth side, sew with the same 1/4" seam allowance, but leave a 1" opening in the center. This opening will be used to turn the coaster right side out later.

3. Pressing the Coaster:

  • Using your iron, press the coaster flat. This helps to set the seams.

4. Clipping the Corners:

  • Snip a small amount of fabric off each corner to help the corners fit better when turning the coaster right side out.

  • For rounded corners, clip a single straight line diagonally across the corner.

  • For sharper corners, clip down each side of the corner, starting close to the corner and tapering out towards the edge.

5. Turning the Coaster Right Side Out:

  • Using the 1" hole, turn the coaster right side out. Doing one corner at a time will make it easier.

  • Press the coaster flat with an iron.

6. Edge Stitching:

  • Using the inside edge of your presser foot as a guide, sew along the edge of your coaster on all four sides

7. Top Stitching:

  • Stitch from corner to corner on each coaster, creating an "X" in the middle.

  • I usually eyeball this line, but if you want a more exact line, you can draw one using your heat erasable marker.

  • This top stitching can also be a circle or a hand-stitched sashiko design, if you prefer.

8. Final Pressing:

  • Press the coaster one more time on both sides. This will set the new stitching.

  • Additionally, if you have some clear starch, such as Best Press, you can spray the coaster with it. This will provide a bit more stiffening.

Coaster Set

Enjoy Your Coasters!

Enjoy your new set of coasters, and reward yourself with a glass of your favorite celebratory beverage.

These coasters can be washed based on your fabric's washing requirements. For instance, if you used 100% quilting cotton like I did, they will be machine washable.
